Question Is this the start of an ice age ?

If you've been watching the news lately, you'll notice that the weather is changing dramatically. Look at this weather report.

An ice storm in Versoix near Geneva in Switzerland rendered cars immovable
Freezing temperatures have caused chaos across Europe as ice and snow have brought traffic to a halt and closed roads.

Telegraph | Feb 1, 2009

Switerzland, France and Spain were just some of the countries to be hit by unusually low temperatures.

In Versoix near Geneva in Switzerland cars were rendered immovable after being covered by icicles.

Icicles also hung danergously from trees and lamposts.

Snowfall snarled traffic in several parts of Spain including the capital, Madrid, on Sunday, while a storm in the south disrupted ferry travel from the port city of Algeciras to Morocco, authorities said.

Sections of two highways in the Madrid region were temporarily closed to vehicles triggering traffic jams, the National Travel Administration Department (DGT) reported.

Parts of central and southwestern Spain also reported long queues, before traffic returned to normal in most areas by midafternoon.

Spanish airports, however braved the conditions and reported normal operations, with the cold snap causing just a few delays.

Snow was also expected to hit northern France late on Sunday, where 32 departments have been placed under orange alert including the Paris region, Meteo-France announced.

The French weather service did not expect major accumulations of snow, but icy rain may make transportation difficult, it said.

The cold snap comes shortly after both Spain and France were hit by violent storms late last month that killed 25 people and left hundreds of thousands of homes without power.

Just found some good reading with evidence about The Ice age idea. This is the link.

I don't think so.

Sea levels will probably rise as the ice-caps melt completely. This is only my interpretation of the Sanctus Germanus prophecies, but it is coroborated by many of the other visions of the future I read about.

Let's be blunt, if and when I buy my next house it will be >180m ASL

But I must point out that it is not technically an ice storm. Amazing as the result are, it is merely water being blown by stong winds on cold surfaces, only the area close to the waterline must have been affected. True ice storms occur when a layer a warm air sits on a layer of cold air, instead of snow you get rain wich hits the cold ground and freezes instantly.

It is the beginning of a weather extreeme age. Colder cold, hotter hot, faster wind, wetter wet, and drier dry.

remember -- in the cold / the germs get killed

it is easier to deal with cold/then, it is to deal with extreme heat

there are always poles;
that the sun does NOT touch
due to the round shape of the earth

where it melts / somewhere else it will freeze

there is apparently the same amount of water,
as, there has always been

it is in one form, or another form

continually altering/changing and shifting

so, perhaps, we do NOT have all that much to worry about

it is possible to live on a boat, on the water

I disagree, having lived in northern Minnesota for 19 years and south Florida for 25 years, it's much easier to sweat than to freeze.

as late as 1956,
many people in canada
did NOT have indoor heat / outside of a pot belly stove in the kitchen
and, they NEVER froze to death, or died

why is it, that the hot climates,
seem to have all the poisonous snakes,
brown recluse spiders, and, aligators/crocs, etc.,

while in the north here

we have rattlesnakes, which, do NOT bother you,
unless maybe you step on their nests
which, are generally built where people are NOT

when it gets real cold
you could find a good mate
and, go to bed !!!

(although, i've spent my life single-and, haven't yet died in the cold alone)

winter actually passes very quickly,
the ground hog saw it's shadow
so, we will have 6 weeks of winter...
then, spring

can't wait til approx march 16th, for spring
st. pattie's day on the 17th march
i hope i can wear shorts !!!

bears eat a lot and, go to sleep for the winter

maybe, we should be more like bears

i'd rather stay home, than try to live in 118 degrees in phoenix

and, i've tried florida in the summer -- the humidity is awful

Hi eXchanger - I also like the little spiders and snakes, bug kills that the cold offers. At the same time, if the climate is changing, it's good that people are aware so we can roll with it and adapt without too much trouble.

In Canada, for instance, there was a Health Canada report that warned of the "harmful impact of climate change on the health of Canadians, particularly the young, elderly and aboriginals." (I clipped it out of the Globe and Mail, Jul23-08.) The Conservative government low-balled the release - everything really quiet - with a major climate change study!! Apparently, it was the second time it happened in one year!! So, it's been studied.

Why information isn't splashed around, so populations can prepare and move through it, is suspect IMO. The Health Canada report is called "Human Health in a Changing Climate: A Canadian Assessment of Vulnerabilities and Adaptive Capacity." Information can be obtained for free (as I recall) on the government website. http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/ewh-semt/clim.../index-eng.php

There was a similar study in 2007 "From Impacts to Adaptation" (specific impacts for each region of the country). http://adaptation.nrcan.gc.ca/assess/2007/index_e.php

Anyway, it is what it is. I heard the London UK school children had a snow day yesterday, and played outside - recess all day!! I sure wish 'disaster'/ change projections by governments wouldn't be secret, or quietly leaked, or whatever it is governments don't do for us.

peace

I think it would be kind of foolish to jump to conclusions so quickly. It's the same thing with global warming.

I agree. I do not like the heat. I wouldn't mind some cold.

I'm well adapted for the cold. Can't handle exteme heat that well but after a while, I may have to.

I got the shivers just looking at that photo. The reason it is so cold is due to the lack of sun spots. Why the lack of sun spots when we are suppose to be at a solar maximum is a mystery. Actually a bit scary.

even if you could move the cars,
the road, would be like a skating rink

i remember ice storms as a kid
and, we could actually skate on the sidewalk
and/or, go sliding

that was a lot of fun

i kind of relish, all the seasons

right now,
since the groundhog saw his shadow

it means only 6 weeks left of the winter

i can NOT wait for spring

i love having wood burning fires inside

and, kind of like looking out at it,

snow and, snow flakes, are all different and quite unique

i'll try to find a picture and post it,
with the snow spirits in the trees

(can someone give me space for more than 60 photos ???)

True. Things change so quickly, even minute to minute these days.

Very true, you can just throw some clothes on to escape the cold, escaping the heat is much more difficult.

Fact check time.

We are currently at a prolonged minimum of sunspot activity between the end of Cycle 23 and the start of Cycle 24. A nice graph here shows the decrease in sunspot activity since the last maximum in 2001.

The next cycle is forecast to be 30% to 50% stronger than the last one and is expected to reach its peak somtime around 2012. The previous cycle (23) was weaker than the previous two (21 and 22). Cycle 24 is forecast to be only slightly stronger than 21 and 22. Other forecasts predict not much difference between the strength of Cycle 24 and the previous cycle (23).

While some scientists are reluctant to state that there is a direct causal connection between sunspots and climate (because sunspots have only a small effect on the overall energy output of the sun), it is generally recognized that solar output changes over long periods of time and this does affect climate.

The Maunder Minimum from 1645 to 1715 was a period of very low sunspot activity that coincided with the Little Ice Age. Periods of low sunspot activity coincided with the coldest periods of the Little Ice Age.

Nothing to worry about mates, the earth is simply making adjustments to her ecosystems, in order to facilitate her eventual lighter energies, more acceptable flora and fauna, new animal species and a totally friendly environment. Eventually she will settle herself into a very moderate sub-tropical type climate. No ice age, no huricanes or tornadoes, no dessert. Sorry folks, but those thing are all too 3D and it is passing quickly..
