Default 1939 Think

About Peace....

The world was still as it is now. In a huge mess..

the link will take you to watch this.
The only cartoon ever nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, this 1939 Hugh Harman cartoon shows a post-apocalyptic world populated by animals picking up the pieces after a war kills every human on earth.

The message is good. Least we forget that many have died at war since then and yet the rockets fly and the guns blast. Off topic it is but worth a watch.

Puts me in mind of Simon and Garfunkle's "Silent Night and the 6 o'clock news" from the early '70s.

Thumbs up Re: 1939 Think

Hi Carrie,
Thanks for bringing back and to our attention this gem of visonary art!
Yes, 1939 was apivotel year, during the 20th century. It represented some of the best and worst, humankind could create. With the World, just coming out of the Great Depression. The Golden Age - in the film industry was in full bloom. That year gave us, 'Gone With The Wind,' 'The Wizard of Oz,' 'Stagecoach,' 'The Grapes of Wrath,' etc..These visionary cartoon productions, (like the posted MGM production), were inexpensive back then to produce. Also, they were a safe way, for these visionary writers and artist, to nudge a sleeping world into reality. It reflected the conflicting and contrasting paths of a new global ideal. With its visions of a wonderful future, such as that, being promoted at the '1939 New York Worlds Fair.' Aganist the backdrop of the reality of the onslaught of a coming World War. It is worth noting, that cartoon, brings us back too that croossroads again today. Wouldn't you agree. giovonni

Yes I agree, what keeps ringing in my head is we in the U.S. teach "history" so that we as this next group of humans do not "repeat it" yet somehow the whole thing keeps on going as it has. Back to a crossroad.

Peace out to all..

Hi Carrie,
Today 10/21/08, on MSNBC News, a 1942 Walt Disney (Donald Duck) animation short, was highlighted. Its context was, to emphasize the need to buy war bonds and to save and share resources for the war effort. Do you remember, as a child watching (many of these types of cartoons) war time and post war era cartoons? All the cartoon shows would, from time to time play them. They covered all kinds of subject matter, and sometimes used animation parodies of famous movie stars. Sometimes portraying them in animal characterizations-ha! giovonni
