Something serious is happening in the cosmos. Have a look at the magnetosphere. It appears the fields are reversed or non-existent. No magnetosphere is something we have been warned about (there has been a huge hole in it for a few years now) and it really does appear to be so:

Looks like Earth's charge is running down. No new current is flowing in. Blue lines should be on top and red lines on bottom, such as the magnetic field should dictate.

But they are not in such a way. The polarity is going the opposite way.

Should also be noted that there were many Gamma Ray Bursts today (10 in the past 7 days):

And now this:
COSMOS IS FALLING: The first fragments of shattered satellite Cosmos 2251 are about to reenter Earth's atmosphere. According to US Strategic Command, fragment 1993-036PX will reenter on March 12th, followed by 1993-036KW on March 28th and 1993-036MC on March 30th. These are probably centimeter-sized pieces that will disintegrate in the atmosphere, posing no threat to people on the ground.

Cosmos 2251 was shattered on Feb. 10th when it collided with another satellite, Iridium 33. Cosmos 2251 possessed about one and a half times more mass than Iridium 33 and to date appears to have produced more than twice the number of fragments.

AND IF THAT'S NOT ENOUGH, CNN has reported that there has been an evacuation of the International Space Station. Of course, within minutes they said evacuation is cancelled but I don't think so. Hopi Prophecy says something about when the ISS falls, that is the last sign.

This guy or girl seems to be a doom amd gloom kind of person, yeah there's a hole or two in our magnetosphere but I don't think it suddenly reversed and it surely isn't non-existent or we would have all kinds of weird stuff happen, and I don't think we will really have to worry so much until 2012 when the maximum solar cycle occurs.

We won't have to worry about the satellites falling either because they'll burn up before they even get close to hitting the ground, I mean we've had satellites falling for years with no trouble.

And yes the astronauts went to the escape pod just long enough to wait for a little tiny piece of debris to pass and that was it.

I recently told my cousin the magnetosphere was weakening (based on nothing except my own intuition and foreknowledge)...so this news is not surprising.

Space scientists around the world are today celebrating the first anniversary of the European Space Agency's revolutionary Cluster mission to explore near-Earth space and study the interaction between the Sun and Earth.

The fluctuating fortunes of the magnetic field surrounding Earth are monitored by the Cluster flotilla
Cluster has also provided the first confirmation of waves along the magnetopause - the outer limit of Earth's magnetic field. Until now, these plasma waves have only existed in computer simulations, but the Cluster spacecraft have surfed these waves and confirmed their existence. The speed of the waves has been estimated at around 70 km/s - equivalent to travelling from London to Paris in 4.5 seconds. One of the real surprises concerned the polar cusps - 'windows' above the northern and southern polar regions where the particles from the solar wind can penetrate the magnetic shield. These cusps rapidly shift position due to gusts in the solar wind. The Cluster quartet has shown that they pivot through space at between 10 and 30 km/s - the first time this motion has been directly measured by spacecraft.





In June 2001 Cluster began to explore the magnetotail - the region where storms of high energy particles are generated
The best is yet to come...

The latest chapter in Cluster's exciting exploration began in June, when ESA's intrepid flotilla began to explore the elongated magnetotail which stretches far beyond the Moon. During the next few months, Cluster will cast new light on this region where storms of high energy particles are generated. When these particles arrive at the Earth, they can cause intense auroras on the nightside of the Earth. A less attractive consequence is their ability to cause power cuts, damage satellites and disrupt communications.

Space weather affects people and society in many ways. Let's take a look at the ways radiation and magnetic disturbances in space can affect us here on Earth.
Space weather "storms" can disrupt radio signals. We use radio waves for cell phone signals, television, and to communicate with airplanes. Space weather storms can interfere with those signals. GPS (Global Positioning Systems) use radio waves from satellites. Those systems are less accurate during space weather storms. The ionosphere is a part of our atmosphere. Radio signals can bounce off the ionosphere. Space weather causes changes to the ionosphere.
Space weather storms change the magnetic field around Earth. That can really mess up compasses! Changes to the magnetic field can make electricity flow in strange places. That can damage electrical power systems and metal pipelines.
Space weather creates different types of radiation. Radiation can harm people and other living creatures. It is especially dangerous to astronauts in space. It can also be a problem for people in jet airplanes. Some animals, like homing pigeons, have natural compasses. Space weather storms can make it harder for those animals to find their way around.
Satellites can be damaged by space weather storms. Radiation can damage electronics on satellites and can "wear away" at solar panels. "Strong" space weather heats Earth's atmosphere and makes it puff up. That makes more drag on satellites, which tend to fall out of orbit sooner.
Not all space weather effects are bad, though. "Storms from space" can produce beautiful light shows called the aurora, or Northern and Southern Lights. There are myths, legends and art in Arctic cultures about the aurora. For example, one Norse myth says the Northern Lights are reflections from the shields of the warrior-maiden valkyries.


Space weather storms can cause trouble on Earth. Strong storms can mess up radio signals, shut down electrical systems, and expose people to radiation.

This image shows the reversals of Earth's magnetic field over the past 5 million years. The scale along the left is time, going backward from the present as you move down the page, in millions of years before the present day. Chrons are long periods during which the magnetic field remained oriented in one direction for most of the duration of the chron. The current chron, called the "Brunhes normal", began 780,000 years ago. The immediate prior chron was the "Matuyama reverse". Periods during which Earth's magnetic polarity was "normal" (that is, the same as it is now) are shown in black, whereas periods of reversed polarity are shown in white. Most chrons are interrupted by shorter periods, called subchrons, during which the field flips to the opposite of the dominant orientation during the longer parent chron.

The Earth has a magnetic field with north and south poles. The Earth's magnetic field reaches 36,000 miles into space.
The magnetic field of the Earth is surrounded in a region called the magnetosphere. The magnetosphere prevents most of the particles from the sun, carried in solar wind, from hitting the Earth.
Some particles from the solar wind can enters the magnetosphere. The particles that enter from the magnetotail travel toward the Earth and create the auroral oval light shows. The Sun and other planets have magnetospheres, but the Earth has the strongest one of all the rocky planets. The Earth's north and south magnetic poles reverse at irregular intervals of hundreds of thousands of years.

On Earth’s night-side, the plasma sheet boundary layer separates the plasma sheet region, located around the magnetic equator, from the northern tail lobe, a region almost empty of matter called plasma.

However, there are two regions located around the magnetic poles, known as polar cusps, where solar particles can precipitate along magnetic field lines towards Earth’s magnetic poles (step 1). At each pole, a significant fraction of these particles bounce back along the magnetic field lines and populate the plasma mantle, a plasma layer located on the night side of the Earth, inside the magnetosphere and along its boundary (step 2). Under the action of electromagnetic forces, plasma contained in the mantle drift equator-ward, across the tail lobe and the plasma sheet boundary layer (PSBL) towards the current sheet region along the tail axis. Then, there exist a few localized regions in the current sheet called resonant locations (step 3), where ions acquire kinetic energy along the magnetic field. The further these resonant locations are, the more energy the ions acquire. Such accelerated ions are beamed back to Earth, from the magnetic equator, into the PSBL, towards the poles, in a kind of elongated parabolic flight along terrestrial magnetic field lines (step 4).

Pioneering 3D view of near-Earth magnetic 'dance'

Scientists have obtained the first-ever 3D picture of interconnected magnetic ‘dances’ in near-Earth space, known as magnetic reconnection events.

The data from ESA’s Cluster satellites will help to understand better magnetic reconnection, a process related to star formation, solar explosions and the entry of solar wind energy into the near-Earth environment.

Magnetic reconnection is the process whereby magnetic field lines from different magnetic domains collide and reconnect, mixing previously separated plasma. Plasma is a gas composed of ions and electrons but is electrically neutral, spread over large distances in space and guided by the action of magnetic and electric fields.


Magnetic reconnection
Magnetic reconnection converts the energy of the magnetic field into particle energy, generating jets and heating the plasma.
This affects us here on Earth because it can possibly affect telecom satellites and prevent the efficient production of electricity in controlled fusion reactors, potential sources of electricity for the future. On Earth, we can also see the effect in more intense displays of the Northern lights.
On 1 October 2001, the four Cluster spacecraft were flying in formation at approximately 110 000 km from Earth in the magnetotail, a long-tail-like structure on the night-side of Earth’s magnetic field. The satellites meandered around a reconnection region over a period of nearly 15 minutes. During reconnection, the geometry of the magnetic field forms an X-shape, also called a ‘magnetic null’. Analysed in 2D, the magnetic field, plasma density and flow velocity data collected during this event showed that only one reconnection region with an X-shape, or a magnetic null, was seen by the satellites.
