The Pakistani Army has been given orders to retaliate against any unilateral strike by the Afghanistan-based US troops inside the country.

Army Spokesman Maj Gen Athar Abbas confirmed the orders in a brief interview with Geo News on late Thursday night.

The decision was made on the first day of the two-day meeting of Pakistan's top military commanders to discuss the US coalition's ground and air assault in Waziristan region which killed dozens of civilians.

Pakistan's military commanders expressed their determination to defend the country's borders without allowing any external forces to conduct operations inside the tribal belt bordering Afghanistan, sources said.

"In his statement, Genral Kayani has represented the feeling of the entire nation, as random attacks inside Pakistan have angered each and every Pakistani," he said.

Hi Questiny, I found this video from msnbn (Murdoch owned I believe?) reporting on the Pakistan border issue, what I find interesting is the use of the backdrop slogan...MS information...something subliminal going on here? Although, the Pakistan press are reporting the concerns of the Pakistani government over the boarder issue. I think what is being reported here is a very real issue, however, they[msnbn] are telling us look, yes there is a story but what were telling you isn't the whole truth and maybe exaggerated?

I believe as you do. It is a ratcheting up. Have you seen my posts that Pakistan's new President is going to China for his first visit to strengthen ties with them. We are out of Pakistan and they are using the fighters we sold them to counter our drone flyovers. They are no longer friendly to us.

I agree with Q. I have been discussing this issue in some other posts with RockyShorz. I believe the "rift" occurred prior to the Musharaff ouster, though it is likely that he was clinging to the friendship with the Bush/Cheney/Israel cabal (thus his ouster). It looks to me that Pakistan has allied with Russia/China(somewhat silent partner right now), Venezuela, Bolivia, Argentina, Iran, et alia versus U.S., Israel, Western Europe, et alia. This is a developement that has not been seen, at least publicly, since the conclusion of WWII and the creation of NATO, the Marshall Plan, the Soviet Bloc, etc...

I see Georgia and Pakistan as the central theaters in this "global shift", at least for the moment, with the fate of Iran in the balance. It seems to me that the U.S. gang needs to consolidate the Georgian and Pakistani situations prior to making the move on Iran.

This situation needs to be observed carefully.

They still feel threatened by us and they hold to much of our debt right now so it looks like they are on our side. But when push comes to shove China will make an offer and Japan will accept. China is more in line with their policies and vision.

I second the answer to your post given by Q. I have been talking about the "taking of sides" in quite a few posts for a few days now. I think Japan has been a vassal of the Rockefellers for a long time now, always with designs to break free. This is the situation they have been waiting, and I believe, preparing for. It is for this reason that I back Q's assessment. As the creditor in the picture (flash back to 1980) this would be unwise. As the debtor, they are free to make just such a move. China, as the modern creditor nation, will be a much preferrable partner.

Back to the "line drawing" see Georgia, Pakistan, Latin America, South America, Iran - versus - U.S., W. Europe, Israel - with the (seemingly) silent partners China, India, Japan.

Follow news threads relating to these nations and it seems to me that you can see clear lines "in the sand" being drawn.

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan - Pakistani troops and tribesmen opened fire on two U.S. helicopters that crossed into the country from neighboring Afghanistan, intelligence officials said Monday.

The helicopters did not return fire and re-entered Afghan airspace without landing, the officials said.

Pakistan's army and the U.S. military in Afghanistan said they had no information on the reported incursion late Sunday, which will likely add to tensions between Islamabad and Washington.

A spate of suspected U.S. missile strikes into Pakistan's border region and a raid by U.S. commandos said to have killed 15 people have angered and embarrassed Pakistani leaders while signaling Washington's impatience with Pakistani efforts to clear out militant havens.

During a recent speech to Parliament, newly elected President Asif Ali Zardari, who is considered U.S.-friendly, warned that no country would be allowed to violate Pakistan's sovereignty in the name of the war on terror.

Zardari is on his way to New York to attend the U.N. General Assembly, and he is expected to meet President Bush.

The two intelligence officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to media.

They said informants in the field told them of the incursion around one mile inside the disputed and poorly demarcated border in the Alwara Mandi area in North Waziristan, a tribal region the U.S. considers a sanctuary for Taliban and al-Qaida fighters.

A week ago, U.S. helicopters reportedly landed near Angoor Ada, a border village in nearby South Waziristan, but returned toward Afghanistan after troops fired warning shots.

A Pakistani military spokesman said last week that troops had orders to open fire in case of another cross-border raid by foreign troops.

There are conflicting accounts over whether Pakistan's top leaders were due to have been in the Islamabad Marriott hotel which was bombed on Saturday.

Interior ministry head Rehman Malik said the president, prime minister and military chiefs should have dined there but changed venue at the last minute.

However, the hotel owner told the BBC there had been no bookings for the leaders to be in the hotel.

A suicide bomb devastated the hotel killing at least 53 people.

More than 266 people were injured.

The Czech ambassador to Pakistan was also killed in the blast, it was confirmed on Sunday.

President Asif Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani were planning to dine at the Marriott, Mr Malik said, before a late change of plan.

"The president and the prime minister changed the venue to the prime minister's house. The function was not held at the Marriott, thus the whole leadership was saved." He did not say why the dinner plans were changed.

But later on Monday the hotel owner, Saddrudin Hashwani, flatly contradicted Mr Malik. Mr Hashwani told the BBC there was never a booking for a government dinner at the Marriott hotel on the night of the bomb attack.

In other developments, it was reported that Pakistani troops fired on US helicopters that violated Pakistani airspace near the border with Afghanistan on Sunday night.

Tensions between the US and Pakistan have risen in recent weeks amid US accusations that Pakistan is not doing enough to combat Taleban militants in the region.

And in Peshawar, capital of Pakistan's North West Frontier Province, an Afghan diplomat was kidnapped and his driver killed, reports said.

The heavily guarded Islamabad Marriott was attacked at about 2000 (1500 GMT) on Saturday.

CCTV footage of the moments before the blast show a six-wheeler lorry ramming the security barrier at the hotel gate.

The bomb - believed to have been detonated in the lorry - left a six-metre (20ft) crater.

Rescuers have been combing the wreckage for survivors and bodies.

Most of the dead were Pakistanis, although one Vietnamese, a German and an American are also known to have died, with an American and a Danish intelligence officer missing, presumed dead.

The blast has prompted British Airways to cancel two flights to Pakistan "in light of the security situation".

No-one has yet admitted carrying out the attack, but the Pakistani Taleban are thought to be the most likely perpetrators.

The Marriott was the most prestigious hotel in the capital, located near government buildings and diplomatic missions. It is popular with foreigners and the Pakistani elite.

The hotel has previously been the target of militants. Last year, a suicide bomber killed himself and one other in an attack at the hotel.

The BBC's Barbara Plett, in Islamabad, says the latest attack might have been retaliation for army bombardments of suspected Taleban targets with jet fighters.

Earlier on Monday, Pakistan's government said it would take targeted action against the militants, promising raids in some "hotspots" near the border with Afghanistan.

Away from Islamabad, troops reportedly forced US helicopters out of Pakistani airspace in the tribal area of North Waziristan.

Our correspondent says that following a series of US raids on Pakistani territory earlier this month that it reserved the right to retaliate, with a series of warning shots the standard procedure.

In Peshawar, Afghan consul Abdul Khaliq Farahi was in a car in a city suburb when it was attacked by six unidentified men, officials say. His driver died in the attack.

The US defense secretary said that in his view the UN charter allows the United States to act in self-defense against international extremists in Pakistan if its government is unable or unwilling to deal with them.

"We will do what is necessary to protect our troops, but it is every important to engage the Pakistani government," he told lawmakers.

Gates and General James Cartwright, the vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said there were signs of improved cooperation with the Pakistanis despite the frictions.

"I think the threat that they are seeing ... creates the opportunity where we can work together and there is no necessity for us to take any actions to protect our troops along those lines," Gates said.

Recent Pakistani military operations in northwestern border area was having a positive impact, he added.

Cartwright said there also has been "an uptick" in Pakistan's willingness to participate in border control centers where US, Afghan and Pakistani military personnel share intelligence and coordinate actions in the border.
