American Airlines plane crashes into Hudson River

I'm not naive enough to believe that a BIRD of all things could cause engine failure.

Humble Janitor, birds are a major problem for airports, they use all kinds of things to try to keep birds away from runways. They use dogs, cannons, and even destroy the nests and eggs in the nests around airports. I just put a video up showing engine failure by bird ingestion!

Tammy Strange, Executive Director, Augusta Regional Airport: “They do pose a danger to aircraft, they can fly into engines, and fly into the window of the cockpit.”

She’s talking about black birds, and it’s hard to imagine they can create such huge problems…like that of Flight 1549, that had a crash landing into the Hudson River. Over the past few years, Augusta has seen its own fair share of these problematic black birds.

Cedric Johnson, Augusta Aviation Commission Chairman: “We’re going to go to every length that we can to try to get rid of the birds because it is a safety issue.“

That was Augusta Aviation Chairman, Cedric Johnson back in August. Then the birds were getting out of control and millions would fly to and from the wetlands which surround the airport.

Strange: “That’s where they were nesting. They were coming in at night and leaving in the morning, so they were flying over the airport like two times a day.”

But not anymore now that the grass is being cut at the treatment facility to remove the birds habitat.

Strange: “We did do pyrotechnics to scare the birds, and to change their flight path. And also we have air cannons."

It’s all in the name of safety, trying to prevent something like this and protect everyone on board.

Strange: “That’s a continuous thing for an airport all airports have bird problems and their always trying to do things to mitigate that.”

Birds the size of adult Canada geese, which can weigh from 4½ to 12 pounds, can quickly disable the biggest, most well-built jet engines.

There isn't an engine that's designed to take a goose through it," said Steve Garber, a biologist who once headed the PA anti-bird-strike program.

Geese on Rikers Island threaten planes at La Guardia, Garber said, and JFK Airport is near a giant wildlife refuge. The PA has battled JFK's bird problems by using falcons to scare off seagulls, and setting up noisemaking cannons, but the threat has never been eradicated.

"A 2-pound bird can destroy the internal mechanism of a gas-turbine engine so that you're unable to restart it," said Robert Spragg, an attorney with the Manhattan firm Kreindler & Kreindler, which specializes in aviation law

We just had enough of them Americans.

I can see that a bird can destroy the turbine but I have seen so many test on TV that tried to make them 'birdproof', you throw in a chicken and you get chicken mash in the back. Didn't bother the machine.

But hey, chicken might just be fodder compared to large birds.

More than 82,000 bird strikes were reported from about 1,600 U.S. airports between 1990 and 2007, the committee said.

US Airways would not confirm that the Flight 1549 that took off January 13 was the same plane that splashed into the Hudson two days later.

Valerie Wunder, a US Airways spokeswoman, said: "US Air is working with the National Transportation Safety Board in this investigation." She would not comment on any other details, including Tuesday's flight, though she did confirm US Airways is looking into it.

I have a feeling that every one who was on board was trained for this event, I wonder how they came outside so fast and were standing on the wings, and then the rescue boat came..

Hmm, hard to believe that Barack Obama had nothing to do with this.

Thanks gio!, and IndigoChild1986 all the stewardesses and or stewards were around 50 years old and up and all were very experienced, plus if you're in a plane that just landed in the water then I would think that everyone would be in an extreme hurry to get out as soon as possible!

In my younger days I was 'cabin crew' - what you say is correct - cabin crew are there mainly for safety and are highly trained to get people off the aircraft in emergencies such as this.

Birds are also a very real danger - my husband was a pilot, whilst flying a light aircraft over Irian Jaya his plane suffered 'bird strike' - both he and his passenger were killed. Don't ever doubt what birds can do to an aircraft. If the plane brought down in the Hudson safely by a very experienced pilot was the result of bird strike is open to debate but believe me birds are a real problem as the pictures in posts above demonstrate.

That pilot is a hero in my book.

WASHINGTON – Investigators said Wednesday they have found the remains of what may be a bird in the engine of the US Airways jet that made a dramatic landing in New York's Hudson River. The National Transportation Safety Board said an examination of the Airbus 320's right engine revealed evidence of "soft body damage" and that "organic material" was found in the engine and on the wings and fuselage.

Samples of the material have gone to the Agriculture Department for a complete DNA analysis, the board said.

A single feather was found attached to a flap track on the wing and will be examined by experts at the Smithsonian Institution.

This is well planed, I don't doubt that they can place a bird there or any other material to confirm their story.
