Eleni,

Thank you for the detailed reply. This makes sense, as beans do have
alot of carbs in addition to the protein.

I understand they can also present challenges for those battling
Candida.

Quote:
All my friends and relatives who are "A" blood types and especially of East Indian origin friends seem to thrive on a variety of beans, legumes, lentils.
This is interesting, because I had my blood tested about a year ago
and found out that I was also type A. At that time I replaced alot of the
meat and animal protein in my diet with plant based foods. Since then,
my health had improved a great deal. I have made alot of other changes
as well, but this was significant.

On topic, I have had coconut oil recommended by a good friend that
does health consulting and I have recently started putting it in my morning
fruit smoothies-which is why this thread caught my eye.

There are no coincidences!

Some oils are essential for brain. Such as borage oil. Any other oils?

Dr. Mercola really touts krill oil as the best fish oil.

I will try coconut oil for general health benefits and weight control.

I rarely cook with oils.

What are the best ways to take a daily dose of coconut oil?

Swallow a tablespoon?

Oil pulling?

Let me know when you can and thanks. jimmer

OK, I got a jar of extra virgin coconut oil.
I liquified it in a pan of warm water and took a tablespoon dose.

I could really feel it go to work. Lots of GI action, for sure.
It will be interesting to see what's what in a couple of weeks.

Question: has anyone taken the oil by the tablespoon, 'solid'?
If so, does a solid tablespoon equal a melted tablespoon?

I can't see myself liquifying the oil in hot water daily.
If not too gross, taking it solid would probably be the easiest
and most repeatable.

Thanks for any advise or tips you can provide. jimmer

Eating it solid is simpler, just chew it until it melts. Getting the dose exact is not so important, if you level the spoon it should be the same.

It seems like uninterested endorsements are ok, so I will say that my favorite coco oil is "Quality First". Look for it at stores & you will be able to taste the difference from other oils.

I've read up some on taking VCO solid.
I've got a pretty strong constitute, but gulping down heaping tablespoon of it isn't very appetizing to me.

How about mixing it with some unsweetened applesauce?

Any other options that you've tried, short of using it as a cooking oil, etc.?

Options? Sure.
Put some in a blender with fruit and a green superfood powder. Mixing with applesauce would be fine too, would require a blender/processor if oil is solid. Or melt the oil and mix by hand.

Spread it on toast or even untoasted bread. Goes great in warm oatmeal. Coconut oil can be used as a butter replacement. Thinking of it that way may give you more ideas.

Not sure if you meant "gulping" literally... but, remember to chew!

You can make Budwig *oleolux*.......it tastes great....

Oleolux is used in place of butter.

Directions: [These directions give more detail and choice than the book.]

In a container in which you want to store your Oleolux, cool 125 ml (8 tbs) flaxseed oil (FO) in the freezer so that it is chilled but not frozen. This will take about 30 minutes. During the last 20 minutes, prepare the rest of the recipe:

In a sauté pan, heat 250 g [8.8 ounces] coconut oil.
Add 100 g [about one medium-sized] onion cut in small pieces.
Cook until the onion is slightly browned – about 15 minutes.
Add 10 garlic cloves sliced or chopped.
Heat the garlic for about 3 minutes in the pan with the onion.

The onion and garlic are cooked in the coconut oil to give the oil protective qualities of the sulfur in the onion and garlic. This in turn protects the flaxseed oil when it is added.

Pour the coconut oil through a sieve into the cooled FO.

Keep the Oleolux in the refrigerator, in a covered non-transparent container.

Use as a spread on bread, instead of butter on potatoes, and other vegetables.
For the best results, the boiled or steamed vegetables, after being cooked, should be coated with Oleolux.
Oleolux can be used for cooking ONLY in the recipes given by Dr. Budwig in the cookbook, of in the recipes following her method and principles. In recipes she heats Oleolux for only one minute which further protects the sensitive fatty acids in the flax oil. One recipe heats Oleolux for three minutes, that is unusual.

Also in smoothies as mentioned above works well- during my last 2 pregnancies I made a smoothie from raw goat yogurt or goat kefir, some berries, a scoop of goat protein and a tablespoon of virgin coconut oil- really sustained me for a number of hours and I would workout at the gym following that......

Will do next month when the goats are milked and I can make goat kefir again.....

this morning, I smeared a +tablespoon of coconut oil (solid) on half a toasted bagel, followed by a good smear of apple butter.
that tastes great and will replace my usual peanut butter.

I'm noticing a real boost. Seems that incorporating the VCO with food provides a noticeable energy burst. I'm lik'in it!

thanks for all the tips.

as I recall, coconut oil came on to the scene in the '70 as a pop culture tanning-aid.
who would have thought that decades later, it would be rediscovered as a health-aid.
and I like that fact that this is a grassroots movement, not a big science/pharma thing.

power to us.

I'd hazzard a guess because they know most people will take your view and buy the toxic version HJ based on cost. I know how bad non organic is with the pesticides and potential GMO but with certain things like fats and meats it is more important to have pasture (grass) reared meat and organic fats. If the corn is organic it could still produce high omega 6 meat.

I now only use organic butter (although the cow may be corn fed) and tend to eat Lamb even if it isn't organic as I figure most lambs are reared in grass fields (I may be wrong) but it gets a better 3/6 omega ratio...

I wish we could get all the good stuff in Tesco's or Sainsbury's (UK shops) but it is annoying have to pay through the nose for things... wet milled Coconut oil is pretty expensive but after listen to a lady on one radio network who said taking two tables spoons a day it has turned around her husband (within hours it seemed) who has Alzheimers it has got my attention... its the MCT oils...

hi,
I've been taking VCO for a week now and have figured a few thoughts:

firstly:
it's better for me to take it by the melted tablespoon. I tried it as a 'butter' on
the morning bagel half and the metabolic effect wore-off by mid afternoon. crash.
I now take a full melted tablespoon in the morning and a teaspoon at lunch.
good to go all day. I may need to increase usage as I go, but for now this dose works well.

secondly:
it's a bother to melt VCO each time. I've been reading about MCT oil
(the pure extract that is always liquid) and will try a combo of VCO in the morning
(for the health benefits) and MCT at lunch (for the metabolic benefit).
does that sound smart to those who know?
any downsides to MCT?

thanks. jimmer

Great to hear coconut oil is working for you & that you're finding your own way/dose. The MCT oil sounds like an idea worth trying, I'm all for making things easy. Didn't even know an MCT extract existed, so please report back if you try that.

I think I'll go have a spoonful right now...

I prefer non isolated cold /raw extracted oils (Olive and coconut, hemp) over isolated oils like MTC (never tried it but it seems quite refined)...

Here is some info on this couple using both coconut and MCT oil

thanks for the encouragement and the article.

for me, it's about general health effects and increased metabolism.
so far, it's working.

after a full week, stronger nails, more energy, better attitude, some weight lose, although, I have been getting an acid stomach later in the day.
Finding that personal sensitivity and correct dosage seems to be the key.

I will touch base once I start-up an MCT/VCO regimen and thanks again for this life changing tread and helpful advice.

In the meantime, here's a link to VCO articles of interest:

I don't know what your weight is,but from my own experience I can tel that you can get back closly to that of a weight of some one from the age of 20/25 without exersizing.

The key of this succses is dextoxing your body and getting the right nutrition in your body. The basics is the minerals for the body and any toxic stuff in you system to get out that is blocking the functions of your body that it normaly make your body work correctly. While detoxing your body you need nutrition to proctect the body and neutralizing the toxins.

I've posted about that in this post and you can find it in the history.

You can get your iodine source by eating veggie seafoods if your can get a hold on them or get iodine drops.

I tried 'oil pulling' yesterday.
15 minutes of swishing.

First with olive oil. I don't recommend this. tasted disgusting. 15 min = eternity.

In the afternoon, I used a teaspoon of coconut oil (solid that melted in the mouth)
and preferred this. we'll see what the long-term effects are, but I had lots of energy
throughout the day into the evening. so the 'oil pulling' did seem to absorb in my system.
I'll try this (tbspn in a.m., tspn. pulled p.m.) and see what the long-term benefit is.

also, previously, I have noticed a real crashing effect in the early afternoon/evening.
I've been taking a multi-vitamin that contains chromium. I was suspect that something
was poorly interacting with the VCO.
yesterday, I didn't take the vitamin/chromium with an excellent effect. no crashing, felt terrific into the night.
so much for chromium and VCO.

Got more herbs but this is what I mostly use

Also I ferment green tea using kombucha for detox
