Electricity pylons 'could increase Alzheimer's risk', scientists claim
Researchers found that people who lived with 150 feet (50 metres) of a power mast were 24 per cent more likely to die from dementia than people who lived more than 2,000 foot (600 metres) away.

The risks associated with the disease also increased the longer people spent close to the towers, according to the study.

People who lived in the shadow of a pylon for more than 10 years were 78 per cent more likely to die from a form of dementia than those who didn't, and twice as likely if they stayed for more than 15 years.

The study calculated the risks using census data and statistics of cause of death for 4.7 million Swiss people between 2000 and 2005.

The researchers believe that there is a connection between the magnetic fields which surround power lines and an increased risk of dying from dementia.

More than 700,000 people in Britain suffer from dementia, with Alzheimer's, the most common form of the disease, affecting around 400,000 of them.

Experts believe that dementia is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
