For "Survivors" Eyes Only

Peer, I just checked the thread, and all this talk of beer and pemmican is making me hungry!

Pemmican is essentially powdered jerky. For those that don't know how to make either, let me explain. You take slices of meat about a quarter inch thick, and dry them on racks above a low fire. In an ideal situation, you would let the meat soak in saltwater for a bit, and maybe add some spices. You check it often, making sure that is not cooking - basically just dehydrating. When its done, you can grind it up - a mort and pestle would be ideal, smooshing the bejeezus out of it between two rocks will work - into a powder. This powder can be injested straight, or mixed with fresh animal fat or water for a hot meal. French fur traders lived off of pemmican, as large amounts of powder and jerky can be stowed for travel. Its lightweight and supplies the body's protien.

Mobile groups won't need to worry, for whatever reason, about brewing beer. But stationary folks might want to brush up on beer and winemaking - if anything, it could become an incredible exchange commodity. Does anyone here want to give this thread some advice on brewing wine and spirits?

Hey guys, my parents used to make wine and I think I can get the recipe, I think it's very easy, just takes alot of sugar and yeast and some kind of fruit that you want, I remember it being very good because of course I had to steal some when I was a kid!

I kick myself in the rear for not taking the opportunity of paying more attention to my Dad and Grampa when they were brewing their own beer. They did it for years, and it was the stuff that really stuck to the ribs. I also kick myself for not taking the opportunity to learn more from a buddy I had years ago - he made the sweetest raisen, cherry, and strawberry wines I ever tasted. Anything you could share would be great.

In fact my aunt was just telling me yesterday about something they make in Iceland very similar to everclear or pure grain alcohol which could be used probably for an antiseptic also. I'll check into it tomorrow, she's in bed already.(she's 83 and always has a few drinks before dinner)

I am not trying to advertise alcoholic drinks for fun but our ancestors the Germans brewed beer because you cannot always trust the water, espescially in summer and beer contains alcohol and hops, a natural antiseptic so you can drink it without too much danger.
So you should only drink beer if there is no good drinkingwater around and out in the open there isn't unless you find a well.
So no party party for you. You only drink beer because you have to.!!

I know that Europeans drank beer because of bad water. When they arrived in the so-called "New World," some historical authors have found there was something else at work - water was for poor people and savages, beer and wine for gentlemen and the nobility. Believe it or not, John Smith, John Rolfe, and others snubbed their noses at some of the clearest waters in the Chesapeake at times to drink bad beer.

I gotta' disagree with you about drinking for fun. I'm not saying that one has to drink for fun, but it is fun to get together with friends, drink a few hearty beers that are just a few degrees above freezing, and tend a bonfire. I grew up in house where alcoholism ruled the day, and spent my later teenage years essentially drunk. At 21, ironically, I recognized it was a problem for me, and had been my entire life. I went for years without touching the stuff, thinking that a couple beers would lead me to the gutter. Eventually I realized that all the stuff that had made it terrible for me as a kid - the violence, blackouts, and porcelain prayer - was due to a rotten mindset. I always drank to get messed up - the wrong goal when approaching any substance that alters our perceptions. I believe that a couple of beers every now and again with a few friends is good for the soul. I think some sort of brewing and winemaking has its place in future safe/radiant zones.

With that being said, did you know that there is one brand name mentioned in the Bible. When Jesus turned the water into wine at the wedding, he didn't turn it into any old **** - he turned it into Falernum, the best wine in the empire. It can still be purchased today.

Unreal!!!!!!, there they go treating us like kids again, you would think that all of us being adults here can say what we want as far as swearing goes. To the mods. GROW UP! also on a side note you can get cetain multi fuel burners that can burn diff alcohols and petrol ect.. i went into a survial store and the assistant said soldiers in iraq(brit) are drinking metholated spirits cos of an alocohol ban and actually pizz into the feul cap on the stove nesxt day and it runs off that lol.. just another thought about alcohol use..

HC, I agree with you that a few good beers are good for understanding and accepting one another.
I remember the archery-compatitions where the blokes were running around with deadly weapons as compound and hunting bows, with big razorsharp bowieknives on their hips and at night we all enjoyed a nice fire having a few (sometimes a lot) of beers and nothing bad ever happened.

C'est merde, vraiment!

I just found the following site - it has some useful information about water procurement in the wild. Granted, the ideal will be locate on a source of freshwater, or have local control of communal water distribution system (as is the case for Peer), but some of this might be useful for folks on the go, or those who can't settle themselves near water.

Some Suggestions for a Mobile Medical Kit

My mobile medical kit goes with me on every camping trip, and may be an invaluable resource while “on the go.”

A simple backpack will work – and the simpler (and cheaper) the better. What you should really care about is the width of the main inner compartment, and the quality of the zipper. You should pick something dark; mine is dark forest green. Once you have it, cram it full of the following:

A big roll of masking tape (commercial medical tape is flimsy and expensive), and a big roll of duct tape.
A big roll of gauze (forget band aids).
Two elastic bandages, and a package of safety pins.
A big tube of antibiotic cream.
A pack of needles, and spool of black medium gauge thread.
One bottle of alcohol, and one bottle of hydrogen peroxide.
One pint of Everclear – doubles as alcohol when you run out, and anesthesia if needed.
One bottle of high dose acetaminophen, and one bottle of high dose aspirin.
One package of water purification tablets, and one big bottle of water (from the store).
One scalpel or exacto knife and one pair of hemostats.
A cigarette lighter.
A set of clean syringes – for fluid and poison extraction, not for injection.
Take a heavy duty bath towel, cut it into two inch wide strips running length ways, put them on top of each other and roll them up into a disk, and cram them into your backpack. They’ll serve as tourniquets and splint ties.
A big bottle of good multi-vitamins.


That will leave a little space for person-specific needs, such as prescription medicines for the body, and other herbal remedies for the soul.

Good things to have for sure!, I would also suggest some zip lock baggies for lighters and matches just in case everything gets wet. Question, why does it matter what color the bag is?, you said pick something dark, just wondering.

I have no clue about military stuff, so thanks to all of you guys who share your abilities from the military.

I'm the other half-I can build, sew, cook, make soap, etc.

I have been gathering info on how to sustain in one area...water, filtration, etc.

I'm thinking caves-would that stop the heat seeking? Please share more on a Farady Cage.

I've seen some concrete posts going in the threads like this, but they are far and few, and are not practical.....

I'm gonna start gathering info together FOR ALL of us, but I need your help....

Start thinking if you were writing a training book....
Then....Pick a topic

List supplies needed to do/make the topic
List steps 1.2.3 etc
List anything special you might need to do...skills, knowledge etc
Keep it to one page if possilbe.

I will gather and start shooting to whomever hollars for it....

You can email me off list, if you wish via private message, that way we don't clog up the list.....and I will then ask the mods/admins to make a general topic button for this so all can see.

At last a thread of action! I have not been able to read half of all the information here but I just want to thank you historycircus and other constructive people for finally making this effort. I will catch up to your initiative, in a day or so.

My DNA might mutate into whatever, ET´s might come and give me a 6 week vacation in La La land, "prophets" might actually come down to earth and offer a straightforward and down to earth hint of what to expect. Whatever.
But finally an initiative.

I spend my time on a journey to make dues with karma. I am not going to waste this lifetime on being ignorant and passive due to what may be disinformation in the highest degree. I want to know and I want to live. As long as fate lets me. My dharma is this. And finally a thread that actually gets down to the main issue.
