11-25-08-- Hello Coast Family. I thought I would share another Northern Lights shot taken from Salcha, Alaska looking north towards Eielson AFB. This shot was just amazing to witness. At the time I was pondering how thankful I am for the awesome things that have happened in my life (not to mention I couldn't feel my fingers at -22F ) and these angel wings appeared before my eyes. The weather wasn't the only thing that gave me the chills last night. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Aurora Borealis at Birch Lake

I just wanted to share with the Coast family this Aurora Borealis shot I took last month (4/08) on Birch Lake about 60 miles south of Fairbanks, Alaska. My bride and I were parked on the lake listening to the water slapping the underside of the ice along with the ice flexing sounding just like a shotgun blast in the distance. Ice thickness was still 40" to 35" thick but my bride still didn't like it too well to say the least.

Then the aurora decided to show after waiting a few hours.

This morning in Norway, a bank of nacreous clouds rolled over the city of Trondheim. "They were very colorful (almost like auroras)," says onlooker Ivar Marthinusen, who sent this photo. Nacreous clouds are located in the stratosphere some 9 to 16 miles high. Their iridescent"mother of pearl" colors come from sunlight striking tiny ice crystals inside the clouds. Very low temperatures near -85o C are required to form the crystals, which is why nacreous clouds are seen mainly during winter over places like Alaska, Iceland and Scandinavia.

These clouds are supposed to be rare, yet earlier this year Scandinavians witnessed a veritable "nacreous storm." For more than a week in January 2008, hardly a night went by without someone spotting mother-of-pearl colors in the sky. No one knows what caused the storm or if it could happen again. One thing is sure: northern sky watchers should be alert for more. The best time to look is during the twilight hours before dawn or after sunset.
