Default Probabilities of a pole shift?

A pole shift advocate asks: what if global warming could be, up to a point, a good thing because it helps limit the size of the polar ice so it never reaches a critical mass leading to cataclysm?

I'm wondering if its more likely that we'll just go into another ice age, like we have so many times in the past? It seems that global warming is usually the precursor to an ice age.
