CAMELOT:-

01 The place where KI Arthur held court. $E01, Level-01. The home cell (:hc) of the KI. Arthur’s chief city and the capital of Logres said to have been built by Merlin in a single night.

02 Mentioned in Shakespeare’s KI Lear, II, ii, and Tennyson’s Idylls of the KI.

03 Glastonbury: town in Somerset (England). Fabled to be the place where Joseph of Arimathea brought the Christian faith to Britain, and the Holy Grail, in the year 63.

AVALON:-

01 Celtic legend: an island represented as an earthly paradise in the western seas, to which KI Arthur and other heroes were carried at death. Avalon is also known as the Isle of Apples. Ducking for apples at Hallowe’en symbolizes the dying old year. In the Celtic Beth-Luis-Nion tree alphabet, the apple-tree is ‘Q’ for ‘Quert’, one of the ‘seven noble trees’. Sacred to Aphrodite as a symbol of love and desire, in China it represents peace and concord. Sedgemoor (England).

02 In the game of Chesmayne this is the term used to indicate capture (*) of MPs/mps and their removal from the board.

03 Elysium or the Elysian Fields: the home of the blessed dead, where they enjoy a happy and carefree life in eternal sunshine and identified with the Islands of the Blessed. Pindar describes how the virtuous dead ‘travel to the tower of Cronus, where ocean-born breezes blow around the island of the blest, and sprays of gold flower from the earth and from the sea crown their heads’. Plutarch has Cronus sleeping eternally on an island in Britain, guarded by Briareus. “I am dead; dead, but in the Elysian fields” (to a peer, on his elevation to the House of Lords).

04 Blessed Islands: otherworldly islands which lie west of Ireland, where the worthy dead and otherworldly folk live in the Celtic paradise. Fortunate Islands/Blessed Islands: earthly paradise located to the west of Ireland and ruled by Morgan and her nine attendant muses. Tir nan Og.

05 Glastonbury: a town in Somerset (England) and traditionally associated with Arthur and the Holy Grail. The name derives from Ynys Witrin (Isle of Glass) and has been identified with Avalon. Joseph of Arimathea is believed to have brought the chalice, used by Christ to celebrate the Last Supper, to Glastonbury which became the first shrine of the Grail.

06 Hesperides: garden of the gods on the western extremity of the Greek world (analogous with Avalon, Fortunate Isles, Blessed Islands etc).

07 Hy Breasil (Irish/Gaelic): Irish earthly paradise and considered to lie in the furthest west. Spanish adventurers applied the name to the new land they discovered, Brazil.

08 Annwn: Welsh legend: the land of the departed (Celtic Hades).

09 Ogier the Dane and Oberon (KI of the fairies) held their courts at Avalon.

10 Nullibiety: the state of being nowhere.
