The new feature on Google Earth that allows the oceanic depths to be scanned has revealed what some have already called the true location of the legendary lost city of Atlantis. The Sun newspaper reports that Aeronautical engineer Bernie Bamford of Chester was puzzled by a grid-like structure that he spotted on the ocean floor, more than 5.5km below the surface, and is about the size of Wales. The underwater image can be viewed at the co-ordinates 31 15'15.53N 24 15'30.53W and coincide with the folkloric location of the lost Continent; in an area 1000 Km off the cost of west Africa in a region called "The Madeira Abyssal Plane". Google has already dismissed the findings as being an artifact of the data collection process, arguing that the perfect lines were drawn by the path of boats that carry the sonar equipments. The data collected by Google Ocean is in theory much less reliable than the satellite pictures of Google Maps which have a resolution of 43cm (18 inches). Google Ocean is available through Google Earth and allows people to plunge beneath the sea and literally swim around, navigating around mountains and above shipwrecks. |
