Canadian soldier returns to serve after loosing leg to IED

"TORONTO — Captain Simon Mailloux says he has unfinished business in Afghanistan, and so he’s returning to duty in the wounded land where he lost his leg two years ago.
The Globe and Mail reports Captain Mailloux, 25, a commander with the Royal 22nd Regiment at La Citadelle in Quebec City, will ship out in November.
A military spokeswoman said she believes he is the first amputee to return to service in Afghanistan.
Mailloux was still a lieutenant on the night in 2007 when an IED — improvised explosive device — severed his leg, and also killed two fellow Canadian soldiers and an Afghan interpreter.
He returned to Canada to begin a gruelling rehabilitation, adjust to life with a prosthesis and tour rehabilitation centres offering hope to other wounded soldiers.
In Afghanistan, he will serve as a staff officer at Kandahar Air Field headquarters, but Mailloux has again completed the grinding training regimen that hardens soldiers for combat duty and says he’s ready continue the work he started more than two years ago.
Steve Harris, chief historian with Department of National Defence in Ottawa, says Mailloux’s action exemplifies soldiers’ sense of loyalty and dedication to duty, and to their fellow soldiers"
