![]() ![]() Heidelberg / New York, 17 June 2009 The bitter side of sweeteners New test detects artificial sweetener traces in German water Sewage treatment plants fail to remove artificial sweeteners completely from waste water. What’s more, these pollutants contaminate waters downstream and may still be present in our drinking water. Thanks to their new robust analytical method, which simultaneously extracts and analyses seven commonly used artificial sweeteners, Marco Scheurer, Heinz-Jürgen Brauch and Frank Thomas Lange from the Water Technology Center in Karlsruhe, Germany, were able to demonstrate the presence of several artificial sweeteners in waste water. Their findings1 are published online this week in Springer’s journal Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry. A range of artificial sweeteners are commonly used in food and drinks, as well as drugs and sanitary products. The potential health risks of artificial sweeteners have been debated for some time. Until now, only sucralose has been detected in aquatic environments. Through the use of a new analytical method, the researchers were able to look for seven different artificial sweeteners (cyclamate, acesulfame, saccharin, aspartame, neotame, neohesperidin dihydrochalcone and sucralose) simultaneously, and show, for the first time, that a number of commonly used artificial sweeteners are present in German waste and surface water. Scheurer and colleagues collected water samples from two sewage treatment plants in Germany – Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen and Karlsruhe – as well as from a soil aquifer treatment site located in a Mediterranean country that treats secondary effluent from a sewage treatment plant. They tested the water samples using their new analytical method and detected four (acesulfame, saccharin, cyclamate, and sucralose) of seven artificial sweeteners in the waters from the two German sewage treatment plants, indicating incomplete elimination during waste water treatment. Their analyses also showed that these pollutants contaminate rivers and streams receiving water from the sewage treatment plants. The authors then compared the conventional waste water treatment by sewage treatment plants with advanced waste water treatment by soil aquifer treatment. Traces of artificial sweeteners were present in both cases, proof that water purification was incomplete. Marco Scheurer concludes: “Due to the use of artificial sweeteners as food additives, the occurrence of artificial sweetener traces in the aquatic environment might become a primary issue for consumer acceptance.” Reference 1. Yikes.
All the reason to give up diet-anything. I wish there were more drinks made with cane sugar because occassionally, it's nice to enjoy such a drink. There's always brewed tea with sugar in the raw or no sugar at all. |

I hope it's used more widely. As for Xylitol, it's in the gum I'm chewing right now. I think I can do our water supply a favor by not drinking diet drinks and avoiding medication as often as possible. I wonder if cannabis sativa also leaks into the water supply? |

Funny, talking about that Humble Janitor, living in Switzerland, youd think the water is safer, well, Ive been reading labels on everything(including the sugar in mentioned topic of thread) And yes, even here, in the land of "Water" there is fluoride in almost everything (btl water I mean) you really have to study, no matter where you are to see how we are being manipulated!!! Hope that input isnt too far off topic, I just saw water being mentioned again, so I thought Id interject, and for the sugars, I went to a "health food store" here, and they used to sell lolli-
pops made out of honey, I asked the girl working what the new substitute was, and she replied,"its corn syrup, and very good for you!" Sorry, but Im no idiot!!! High fructose, suggested to me at my local , supposid health food store, to replace Honey, wow!!! And stevia, I have to have my father in law bring it to us from Hungary... just an interjection..... |

I am also living with type 1 diabetes for 37 years and discovered stevia this past year. I buy it as a liquid and use only 2 or 3 drops per cup of coffee. Last summer I found the plant at a local nursery, but I was not able to keep it going up here in the Northwest USA. I will try once again this year. It may be that it will need to come indoors for the winter. If I can get it to survive, I should be able to harvest the leaves to create my own tincture. If I succeed, I'll sure let you know.

Anyway, if any water experts are around, my question now is, what can a person do??? I only have a "Grandor" system and a de-calking device on my homes water input... should a person keep going to their Kanton (local city)and keep insisting on the latest water surveys or what would be suggested here???

My apology ~if this sounds too simplistic and off point: But each of us face unique and varied challenges and choices everyday, depending upon where we live and our conditional situations.
I have come to truly believe at this point and time on our planet, that one's own intent~ attitude and behavior has much to do with our health. For many of us, there is daily challenges in regards to maintaining a healthly diet. The stores are filled with many suspect items of nutrition? But~ moving away from artificial substances> is a major start. We can adjust and adapt, if we make the effort and do the work. This planet~ is just as alive as we our. One just needs to tune away from the human noise more often, then gradually {back} into a more natural rhythm with nature. This will~ raise one's vibrational level! There~ you will find the harmony and the balance ~ your lives > need to survive. As far as thriving~ one needs to stay focused upon the task> of living in the present moment. Begin to turn away more and more from the constant 3D negative spin. Focus on manifesting your thoughts~ into its highest creative form~ that of emotion and its projection of love> towards all there is ~ Then all water will taste sweet> upon the lips of your spirits soul. Now, does anyone got any suggestions about weaning oneself off caffeine ![]() |
