Well, it was called "All Hallows Eve" and the Catholic Church has a special day after on Nov. 1 (11/01) which is "All Saints Day". The Hallows has to do with Hallowed or Holy, so the Holy Eve before ALL Saints Day. It was basically a way to take over Sowain, and try to keep the pagans happy so they could still observe it and not be heretics. Just like Christmas and Easter being big prior Pagan and/or Jewish feast days.
