Everything has life. Life feeds on life. It's part of this incarnation I have had a very difficult time trying to accept. It's ok to eat what you want, if you maintain what you need, and give respect and Thanks to all of the life that enables you to live as well.
One reason I can support avoiding meat is more of a "political" solution in that, the way we "harvest' or meat is quite revolting regardless of one's spiritual outlook. It is just not done well, and most of this is a result of "supply and demand". Therefor the only way I could see that improving at all is if the "demand" decreases.
Again, I could never judge someone (at all, but..) based on theri choice of food. If it works for you.. perfect!
