mid-14c., from O.Fr. compassion, from L.L. compassionem (nom. compassio) "sympathy," from compassus, pp. of compati "to feel pity," from com- "together" + pati "to suffer" (see passion). Loan-translation of Gk. sympatheia.

i.e., compassion means 'to suffer together,' 'to suffer with' -- anyone living on Earth now who is burdened w/compassion knows it is no fun -- it is definitely not a path to escape to the 'love & light' realms where it's 'all good'
