Have you heard of John Haitt and his Pahs system. This stands for passive annual heat storage. I reckon this system is one of the best. Its very simple and low imput. No heating necessary! As far as protection from solar flares/radiation goes, four foot of earth sheilding or is it concrete then four foot of earth? Not sure, but certainly underground!
