Re: For "Survivors" Eyes Only
One way to get started with learning about ‘woodsman’ type of things… is go to your local library and seek some books.
One I recommend, if you can find, is “Wildwood Wisdom”, written by Ellsworth Jaeger, published in 1945. It may be difficult to get unless cooperative Library sharing can dig it up. Arrows and guns are not even mentioned in the book… because these other things really are broad and important.
There is a ton of important stuff in a book like this.
The chapters, by content, are as follows:
Outdoor Clothing
Packs and Packing
Blankets and Beds
Shelters
Fire Making
Use of Ax and Knife
Outdoor Sanitation and Health (drinking water, garbage disposal, poisonous insects and reptiles)
Camp Cookery Equipment
Camp Cookery
Useful Animals and Birds
Edible, poisonous and Useful Plants and Trees
Barkcraft
Canoes, Canoeing and Portaging
Trailcraft
Stalking and Calling Animals
Lost… nature’s compasses
Indian Lore
Camp furnishings
Woods in the Winter
A lot of this you can’t learn in weeks… it takes years to gain the experience. Getting away from cities and living where you have the opportunity to experience the plants, animals, and terrain, will be helpful. Get youth involved in 4-H, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts where you can learn together.
See what else your Library has to offer.
