Default Re: Displacement of Earth’s magnetic poles may turn planet into giant Hiroshima.

Charles Hapgoods book on this matter is the only authorative source imho.

BTW if the atmosphere were to disappear and temps drop to zero kelvin, I doubt very much if being close to the Earth's "axis" is going to help much.

What is worrying is not the magnetic pole drift (this has been happening for a very long time) but the possibility that the lithosphere will move across the mantle suddenly.

If this were to happen, the results would be very unpredictable but quite likely involve quakes off the richter scale and dormant volcanoes erupting, quite possibly supervolcanic eruptions. There would also be the possibility of extreme tsunamis as land shelfs fall off into the sea in various locations, not to mention the "water in a bathtub effect" if the movement is sudden. But this is all if maybe and perhaps.

Look up path of the poles, http://books.google.ie/books?id=pJCe...e+pole#PPP1,M1
