the original film was closer to the book, "who goes there?" by joseph cambell. the music score doubles the kick-assness of this movie, so theres no way that the 50s film can compare. by the way--the film 'prince of darkness' by carpenter also has an amazing score. film is pretty good... score is excellent.
i also read that they were considering a remake <eyeroll>. theres a video game out (i stopped playing video games after atari 2600 and nintendo 8 bit), if anyone is interested. its supposed to be okay. not great.

theres also a trip scheduled to go up and camp out in stewart, BC next august at the very same site where the movie was filmed.
