I've no hard facts to contribute but Richard Hoagland said something interesting about fiddling with the date also. It's in the PC interview somewhere. I think he said that in his opinion, The Mayan 'treasures' that made there way back to Europe were salted away at the Vatican and someone there fiddled with the dates to acurately align european date/time with the Mayan calendar.

I think that would have been after the 14th century.
