you will need the usual survival gear, and that needs to include a mask with a pathogen filter and something to catch & purify water. if everything unfolds the way many say it will, there is a great chance that the cities will be quite disease filled due to the resources (or lack there of) and will need to be quarantined, making the cities a prison.
i suppose i could try and understand your curiosity for being in the heat, but i assure you, it will be just as interesting anywhere you go outside of the city with plenty of opportunities to be of even greater service.
if you had to choose to grow crops that would feed 1000 people 30 miles out of town or to spend that same amount of time in a situation where you could possibly be fighting for your very survival...which would you choose?
