I can't argue with your point, it's a good one. I never said fear has no function. Obviously, it's both a natural and a smart response to certain stimuli.
Maybe the word I should have used is dread. Whatever you call it, the kind of fear I'm talking about is the kind that paralyzes, that makes people not want to know what they need to know.
Of course we are afraid of things, sometimes. But a semiconstant state of dread is killing. How do we acknowledge fear and move ahead anyway? What do we do when our thinking is muddled by fear? Who do we reach out to? What do we reach for? And how do we help others tame their fears?
