Well in my opinion, there are easier, cheaper and less noisy/dirty ways to make disappear people from the planet, but with them one never knows what kind of "brilliant" idea will go out of their hat next time so I'll give you the point.
It's a kind of magic, isn't it? I mean they play the magicians game here:
Oh! look at there! It's planes crashing into the twin towers...! What the...!And "abracadabra"! some navy/secret service guys make "plop!" and appear on Mars surface while several thousand innocents die in Manhattan.
