New World Order?

Are we facing a New World Order?

Think of the two major foreign policy events of the past few days: the amazing success of the Bejing Olympics and the incursion of Russian forces into Georgia and its hard not to conclude that we are seeing the re-emergence of two very formidable powers.

The crisis in Georgia has focused attention on Russia's relationship with the West

It seems the old, easy dominance of the West is perhaps on the wane and that Western diplomats are perhaps going to have to spend a good deal less time wondering about the wherabouts of Mr Bin Laden and a good deal more time worrying about the ambitions and attitudes of Bejing and Moscow.

And where does that leave plucky little Britain?

Will we continue to punch above our weight or are we on the down escalator of international diplomacy?

Norman Smith was joined by John Fox, of the European Council on Foreign Relations and a career diplomat with extensive knowledge of China, Alan Mendoza of the Henry Jackson society, a think tank which campaigns for democracy and human rights in foreign policy and David Clarke who chairs the Russia Foundation and was an adviser to the former Foreign secretary Robin Cook.

He began by asking John Fox if we were on the cusp of a New World Order.
