I think you have touched on the very essence Beren,nothing is earned by hate/jealousy/ power/ greed,for all is forgiveness, we have to forgive because in the end that is all there is.

Off the record here;
remember that last scenes of the Return of the Jedi?
Luke DID NOT wish to fight his father and have not returned anger on evil, he fought terribly and was begging his father to find that remaining spark of goodness . He eventually prevailed. That very last words from now ex Vader was : "You already saved me Luke..."

Also on the end of the episode III before dark lord put enhancements on Anakin, he was screaming on Obi Wan -I HATE YOU I HATE YOU... and finally on his very end he realized that HATE does not do any good.
