To my way of thinking, that's a relatively broad term that includes many things. For example: taking care of the needy, helping abused children, being a foster parent, helping to build a house, etc.
I don't feel that marching in the street with signs and distributing flyers is generally worth doing. This is what many people think of as social activism, but the real intent is to get someone else to do something while you pat yourself on the back for being more aware of the world's problems.
