How many times have you read of people who were lost or injured in an inhospitable country, who would have given their life savings for a glass of water or a hot meal? Okay so that's a cliche, but imagine yourself in that situation - a horde of gold or silver won't keep you warm, or feed you when you're starving to death, or save you from starving wild animals who would consider you a nice meal.
Myplanet2 is on the right track. Invest in survival gear. You can always use it to go camping afterwards if the 'S' doesn't hit the fan.

Brinty,
To say that you missed a point somewhere is an understatement. Try to remember in your responses not to assume anything because we all know what that does. I personally know ready2bpeaceful and she has over a year of food and supplies, actually she has the most comprehensive stock of intrinsically valuable (survival gear, food, etc) items of anyone I have known or heard of. She is a master planner. She was lucky enough to have acquired all that she needed for herself and for others in need and still had some money left over. Hence, the reason for this thread.
What use is gold or silver going to be in a devastated environment you ask? How could you or anyone else possibly know until we get into that situation? Is it not one of the only commodities that remains valuable in times of economic turmoil? I could see it being used for trading up for other goods for one. Like Clif High says, there is surviving and there is surviving as comfortably as possible with good planning. Giving ones self the best opportunity for surviving comfortably should be paramount for all who know whats coming down the pipeline. Gold is just another facet of this jigsaw puzzle we are all trying to figure out.
I submit to you that a horde of gold and silver might just do what you say it wont. If my neighbor has wood and is surviving comfortably and I have gold and silver and need wood, gold and silver might just save me and my family's life by providing warmth and the ability to cook.
So do you have an answer to the original question?
