There are 2 categories of knowledge when it comes to the 2012 subject. Those two categories are what you need to know, and what is interesting to learn.

What you need to know is how to stay in the moment and have gratitude. That is it, nothing else is needed. Strait forward and simple. Remember that anticipation of the future is what causes anxiety. This won't prevent you from going though it successfully. Even though it wont prevent you from making the jump to the next highest dimension in this universe, it will make it a huge pain in the ass.

The metaphysical logistics of what is going to happen are purely an intelectual study and nothing more. You could be completely oblivious to the whole thing, and as long as you are taking it as it comes and keeping your consiousness out of the past and the future, the whole thing will be as effortless as breathing. There might be the occasional athsma attack (metaphorical) due to the purging of the past from your consciousness. However, even that will pass even if you do not know what it causing it.

In 4th density the world will appear from your sensory perception to be as this world does. Loafs of bread and paints for painting will still be around. The difference is that the art of manifestation will be effortless. Instead of having to go out for the flower and yeast, you will just think about it being in the fridge and it will be there. It is just a much more positive effortless version of material reality.

Then there is upper 4th density. You continue down your archetypal learning curve in this new reality. That is unless you have already completed it here in this density. Once this evolution of your soul is finished, you will have the option of going for full 4th density ascension where in you attain an unvieled uplink to your higher self in the 7th dimension.

Even the people who die before the galactic crossing will still ascend to 4th density astral. From this point they will have the option of reincarnating on another 3rd density planet. Probably one that is at the same stage of evolution that we have been at for the last few decades. The boat may sail for some, but they can still get in the water and start swimming until they get to the shore and have the chance to get on the next boat.
