Handguns typically have a mandatory waiting period unless you have a state issued concealed weapon permit. If you don't have a conceal permit, get one.

4-10 is light gauge shotgun.
10 gauge is a much bigger load.
I have seen slugs bounce off of targets without doing any damage....

I should add that in my day job I visit with a lot of people and notice that most of them have a general sense or concern that something is about to happen. So make suggestions when appropriate.
