With budget deficits soaring and President Obama pushing a trillion-dollar-plus expansion of health coverage, some Washington policymakers are taking a fresh look at a money-making idea long considered politically taboo: a national sales tax.

Common around the world, including in Europe, such a tax -- called a value-added tax, or VAT -- has not been seriously considered in the United States. But advocates say few other options can generate the kind of money the nation will need to avert fiscal calamity.

A flat national sales tax is not a bad idea. However that is in a situation where it replaces the income tax, not in addition to. Don't I remember Obama saying he wasn't going to raise taxes?? Guess it's time to really get off the grid and say f**k the man.

Lorien,

I'm not sure I understand what people mean when they say "off the grid."

How are you using the term?

When you hear someone say this, it does not always, as you previously thought, just mean to not use electricity.

In this case getting off the grid basically means disappearing from the watchful eye of the government. Living on private land, paying no bills, having no credit cards, having an "income" which does not require paying taxes on. The goal in this scenario is that if the government tries to find you, they can't. :original:

We all would be better off if our food source would be local, preferable our own back yard. I worry about that the most...

:mfr_omg:

Okay. I'm making a mental note of this!

And maybe we can make an adventure out of all of this, if we can just stay in our homes...
