John Lipscomb has a video that tells you how to make
a decent filter with two five gallon buckets, grass, sand,
carbon, and lava rock. Cheap!

This is the unit i use...
it's fabulous / and, very cheap !!!
(even will do pond water)
(gets the flouride out of the water)

Hey Baggy and Seva, at last a good down to earth thread!, the thing about water is really easy, if you are near a lake or stream, all you really need to do is boil it first and if no filtering available then pouring it through several tight knit t-shirts would do,just to get all the smaller stuff out. I think the 5-gallon bucket ideas are cool though! PEACE!

water filters are great, but two things are of utmost importance:

1 - ease of transport
2 - simplicity

until we know what the future will hold, i think that the ability to transport your water filter/water purifier device is most important. anything requiring electricity or replaceable filters isnt a good idea, especially if we have no more access to stores or electric power.
in the worst case scenario, we might have to escape into the woods with a backpack with only the least amount of supplies to steer clear of some military goons rounding us up for FEMA camps.

digging a hole 6 feet minimum away from a moving stream and collecting the water that seeps in, then boiling that water is generally considered safe. all youll need is a shovel and a pot to boil the water.

ive heard that a 1/4 tsp of bleach will disinfect 1 US gallon of water. iodine and silver colloid will also disinfect, with silver colloid being the best choice.

the water cone i listed doesnt require any energy except the sun, but it might be too bulky to carry. solar stills, dew collection, and digging/boiling are the easiest ways to obtain clean water.

if we know that we will stay where we are in the event of some kind of emergency, then water filters will do just fine. i like to take it to the extreme level so that im covered in the worst case scenario.

Looks good Swanny,

We are looking for a low grade filter to take iron out
of our drinking washing water when using the hand pump.

The electric pump (when there is power available) pushes
the flow through a filter which amounts to a tightly wrapped cotton rope. This is enough to provide the best drinking water we have ever experienced anywhere we have ever lived.

But when the power is out, the hand pump output is unfiltered, the water is so red that it stains the five gallon buckets we use to haul it.

The Berkey is overkill for our needs

It's not exactly cheap but the Swiss Katadyn Pocket Microfilter Water Filter is considered the cadilac model for backpackers. I've seen it advertised in the U.S. for about $185.

It has a lifetime warranty, removes the stuff u don't want, and one filter lasts 50,000 quarts.

I just bought one just in case......
