To greet newcomers

Greetings everyone,
Some of my friends here and myself, we have discussed about how to welcome newcomers in Avalon.
I think many of the newcomers here are very eager to do something, but they haven't established any contacts with other members yet, and doesn't know exactly the possibilities.
And shouldn't we “strike while the iron is hot”?
This is valid for the old members too, everybody wants to do something in “the right direction”.

The first idea is very simple:
If we find a member without any friend or very few friends.
Why not offer the member your friendship, and let us start immediately (“A New Paradigm”).
Then we maintain this friendship.

The second idea is also simple:
We have also discussed about a place to meet new and old friends.
I think it was mudra or rhythm or both, that suggested to start a new “Social Group” with the name: “The Lounge Area”, where we could meet “between threads and posts”, where we can make new friends.
We invite all newcomers to “The Lounge Area”, and it will “work automatically”.

Is anybody interested?
If anybody wants to be “steward or host” for this “The Lounge Area”, feel free to act.
Personally I think I have another “path to walk”, but this is very important, as I see it.
Please respond!
Comments very appreciated

It's a good idea but shouldn't this be over at Avalon?, or maybe have a thread in both! Just thinking out loud.

I would just start another thread in Avalon General Discussion with the exact same thing as your first post.

We need to get all to open up and give their input. Some might be too shy at first.
A hearty welcome is always in order:welcomeani:

That 's a good initiative Stiros :)

I feel Dantheman might be right to put this thread in the Avalon general discussion board.

And it looks like Gio could well be interested in welcoming people in the lounge and warm them up.

Can't wait you open this lounge Stiros so I can relax and share a chat with friends from time to time :)

Keep the good work
kindness

Hi.

I think it is a Great idea. As people will need to network in the coming months more so than people have in the past.

Re: To greet newcomers

Thank you, whoever it was, for the “divine hands” helping to modify this thread, to be a continuous one.
I suspect Moderator help here, anyhow thank you.

Thank you everybody, for the interest in “To greet newcomers”.
About the attitude to be more social with each other, I interpret this as a common “YES”.
We can see it as part of a new paradigm.

The first idea to “offer friendship” I will do my part, and I believe others will do theirs.
Anyhow, we have to be aware of this “mechanism”.
And maybe this is a big step in itself, with good consequences.

The second idea, about stewardship for “The Lounge Area”:
We have to remember, that it has to be adapted to the level of existing possibilities.
And we don't know about new possibilities coming, maybe it will end up in something very interactive and fabulous.

Does anybody have a feeling inside, an emotion, that this is the right thing for you to do, this is your life path.
Please don't be shy, step forward, I am sure we all will help in a way coloured by kindness.
A new Paradigm.
Here in Avalon, it is not the same attitudes as “out there”, I have been fully aware of that.
We will all develop ourselves, and we will also encourage others, as well as other Avalonians will encourage us.
Please, step forward. :thumb_yello:
The only “drawback” is that you will get many good friends.... :wink2:
Comments very appreciated.

Re: To greet newcomers

There were a couple of threads that acted like a lounge, but without the elevator music and comfy velvet couches.
The pot bellied stove thread was an informal place styling itself on a
large pot belly stove that people sat around and chatted.
It was a great idea and I wondered why it stopped,
probably because of the open fire safety concerns.
No reason why it cant be used again as long as highly flammable threads are kept well away.

http://www.projectavalon.net/forum/s...=bellied+stove

The Pub was also an informal meeting house,
that was styled on a traditional Irish Pub.
This was a lively venue where music, wisdom and craic was shared
with the help of the incredibly well stocked juke box. A few pints were consumed here also.
This Pub (thread) lost its regular customers with the
introduction of the subscription (cover charge).
But I hear they have done alot of work upgrading it,
new curtains, new menu they even have fair trade tea now and there are new toilets so no going outside anymore.
It may be worth checking out too.

Re: To greet newcomers

OK now what?, I drove by last night and saw the carpet's installed and the painters are finished, I could see a piano and some instruments back on the stage in the corner, um, the local distributer will be there tomorrow to stock the bar and bring coffee and tea. The new "Avalon Lounge" sign is up in the window! Oh, and the kitchen is finished too! So where's the grand opening going to be?, In the subscription only area?, or the social group area? :welcomeani:

Re: To greet newcomers

There has also been much discussion of a place to "chat" in real time. Our current V Bulletin forum does not allow that. I'm checking on the status of our Joomla based Library to act in that fashion. And just got word that will probably not work out. It's too much load on the server.

When I googled "free chat" there are lots of places where real time chat could be set up by someone with the energy to do it. The whole subscription thing has wore me down - so count me out as the doer for setting up a chat room.

Sounds like though - there are several threads here on the forum that can be a friendly place for newcomers, and that friendship invitation feature is awesome, warm and fuzzy.

I'm using the "Minty Skin" (ah so much easier on my eyes) instead of white on dark blue "Avalon Electric" (button is on the bottom left) and so in minty, when I click on the "Home" button I can see a list of who's currently online. In Electric, it's above the buttons, Project Avalon Forum.

I have just been advised you can get Skype for free and up to 24 people can chat there. I can find the link to that later. Will post this now.

Hi again Karen.
Just speculations.
This “To greet newcomers”, is an “open thread” and has a link pointing to a thread that has a “for subscription only”.
You Karen has a Moderator level, me (stiros) and Czymra has a Member level.
Maybe there is something “buggy” in testing the different flags within the vBulletin program.
Just speculations.

That is more likely the cause than the operating systems.
You need to check your board settings. What is the result when you click the link. 404 or nothing at all?
